Mercedes lifts lid on baby CLS - News

MERCEDES-BENZ has lifted the lid on its new baby CLS model ahead of its world debut during the Berlin Fashion Week.

The four-door saloon with coupe-like style is called the CLA and is will be available for order in March with first UK deliveries due in June.

While the newcomer is based on the same platform as the latest A-Class, and will feature the same engine line-up, it looks both sportier and more aggressive.

With its frameless doors, the CLA is near identical to the brand’s Concept Style Coupe and will showcase a radar-based braking system called Collision Prevention Assist as standard.

It is able to warn the driver of an obstacle from a speed of 4mph and to ensure precision braking when the driver steps on the brake pedal.

Established assistance systems like Adaptive Highbeam Assist and the Lane Tracking package with Blind Spot and Lane Keeping Assist are also available.

A pair of 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines, ranging from 122bhp in the CLA 180 to 211bhp in the CLA 250, and two diesel units will be up for grabs.

All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard, come with a six-speed manual or 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission and the CLA 220 CDI will emit only 109g/km of CO2.

Mercedes-Benz chief Dr Dieter Zetsche said: "The response to the Concept Style Coupe was overwhelming. The most frequent comment by far was 'Please put this car into series production.' That's precisely what we are doing now.

"The CLA is a car that does not confuse 'middle range' with 'middling quality'. Its sporty design underscores the sporty side of the Mercedes-Benz brand."
