BRISTLING with high-tech features, the new Audi RS7 Sportback caused a sensation when it was wheeled out for its first public showing at the North American International Automobile Show in Detroit this week.
In standard form the stylish newcomer boasts slingshot performance with its twin-turbo V8 engine sending it rocketing to 60mph in less than 3.9 seconds and on to an electronically limited maximum speed of 155mph.
But Audi reckons that won’t be enough for some buyers, so it is offering two performance packages – Dynamic and Dynamic Plus – which boost the RS7’s top speed to 174 and 189mph respectively.
The newcomer also features what Audi calls cylinder-on-demand technology which shuts down four of the eight cylinders at low to intermediate engine speeds. This, coupled with a stop-start system gives the RS7 the capability to achieve up to 28.8mpg on the combined cycle test, according to Audi.
The four-litre engine drives all four wheels via the latest incarnation of Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system and is paired with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission featuring shortened shift times and offering ‘Sport’ and ‘Manual’ modes in addition to the standard ‘Drive’ setting. Other advanced high-tech features include adaptive air suspension
All that technology doesn’t come cheap and the RS7 will cost “in the region” of £84,000, says Audi. Dealers will start taking orders in the summer with first UK deliveries towards the end of the year.
